The Sunday Rewind: Vol. 13 (March 28, 2010)
by Mr. 5 Star on Mar 28th, 2010Read More » TagsAfter almost a year hiatus, The Sunday Rewind returns with Volume 13! Did you miss it!? The Sunday Rewind is a compilation of tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. They are simply songs that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 Stars”. Check out Previous Sunday Rewinds.
Geto Boys – Mind Playin’ Tricks
Many are not familiar with the 90′s rap group, the Geto Boys. The Geto Boys were every prominent throughout the early 90′s, while many of today’s hip hop fans were in diapers, so I guess we get a pass. Anyhow, many very familiar with what is considered a classic song from the group. In this 1991 #1 hit, the group raps about those hallucinating, paranoid moments many of us have had. The song speaks to anyone who has experienced paranoia and hallucinatory moments; when your mind is “playin tricks on ya”. (Music Video)

TLC – Unpretty
If there was ever a song to teach a life lesson, TLC’s “Unpretty” is it. The song has a strong underlying theme about self acceptance and being yourself. The accompanying music video helps to bring the lyrics to life. The song was also nominated for a Grammy in 1999 for Song of The Year. I’m not sure what song won, but a song with a message like self acceptance is one that probably should have won. (Music Video) *Sidenote: If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the dude playin’ guitar in the field is B.o.B!
DOWNLOAD: TLC – Unpretty (MP3)
Trick Daddy – Shut Up ft. Trina, Co & Deuce Poppito
Though “Nann” was a huge single for Trick Daddy and Trina, Trick Daddy introduced himself to many when he dropped “Shut Up”. The song is extremely raw and in your face. The band-inspired instrumental and “I don’t care” attitude used throughout are very arousing to the average listener. The accompanying music video perpetuates this theme. “Shut Up” is essentially what many now know as “crunk music”, before Lil Jon came along and coined the term. Ironically, Trick and Lil Jon later worked together in 2004 on Trick’s smash single, “Let’s Go“. (Music Video)

Cam’ron – He Tried to Play Me ft. Hell Rell
Cam’ron is most known for his own, unique style of wordplay over an unique instrumental. “He Tried to Play Me”, which appeared on the 2006 album, Killa Season, is no different. Cam delivers his unique wordplay over a melodic instrumental that boasts a strong piano influence, which resembles a catchy nursery rhyme theme. Ironically, the nursery rhyme sound features violent lyrics from Cam and Dipset mate, Hell Rell, a sound the Dipset duo pulls off exceptionally well.
DOWNLOAD: Cam’ron – He Tried to Play Me ft. Hell Rell (MP3)
Clipse – Grindin’ (Selector/Reggae Remix) ft. Sean Paul, Kardinall Offishall & Bless
Clipse splashed onto the hip hop scene with the smash record “Grindin’”, a Neptunes produced record that was mostly known for its one-of-a-kind instrumental. The heavily drug-influenced lyrics probably helped, too. To this day, “Grindin’” is arguably the Virginia duo’s most well-known single from their 2001 debut album, Lord Willin’. Of course, there was a remix, which featured N.O.R.E., Birdman and Lil Wayne, but what ended up being my favorite remix was the “Selector” Remix, also known as the Reggae Remix. To this day, I have no idea what the lyrics are, but they sound good, so who cares!

The Sunday Rewind: Vol. 12 (June 7, 2009)
by Mr. 5 Star on Jun 7th, 2009Read More » Tags
After a one-month hiatus (did you miss it?), The Sunday Rewind returns with Volume 12. The Sunday Rewind is a compilation of tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. They are simply songs that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 Stars”. The Sunday Rewind is done on the first Sunday of each month. Check out Previous Sunday Rewinds.
Cam’ron – Down and Out ft. Kanye West & Syleena Johnson
Cam’ron is most known for his own, unique style of wordplay over an unique instrumental. “Down and Out”, which appeared on the 2004 album, Purple Haze, is a bit different. Yes, Cam still delivers his unique wordplay over great production, except he gets some help from super-producer, Kanye West and vocalist Syleena Johnson, both of whom appear on the chorus of the record.
DOWNLOAD: Cam’ron – Down and Out ft. Kanye West & Syleena Johnson (MP3)
K-Ci and JoJo – Tell Me It’s Real
Staring at the face of what many have dubbed as “The Sophomore jinx” in music, K-Ci and JoJo were faced with the challenge of making not only another hit single, but another great album. Not only did K-Ci and JoJo succeed in getting past the “jinx”, they did so by reaching number 8 on the Billboard 200, led by the hit song “Tell Me It’s Real”, the single from their sophomore album, It’s Real, which would go on to become certified platinum.

Nelly – Batter Up ft. St. Lunatics
“Batter Up” is the final single taken from Nelly’s debut album, Country Grammar, both of which were released in 2001. Many younger listeners may not realize that the chorus of the song alludes to the classic television sitcom, The Jeffersons. The music video even featured the star of the show, Sherman Hemsley, along with the St. Lunatics.

UGK – International Players Anthem ft. Outkast
Just months before Pimp C’s sudden death, UGK released “International Players Anthem”, a record that would feature Outkast and be known as the “summer anthem” of 2007 by many for its distinct, yet fresh sound. The record would later be featured on UGK’s self titled album. The song was also nominated for a Grammy. The music video was awarded “Video of the Year” at the 2008 BET Awards.

Warren G & Nate Dogg – Regulate
“Regulate”, a breakout record from Warren G & Nate Dogg, is considered a classic record amongst many hip hop fans. Released in summer 1994, the song tells a story of 2 homies uniting to do one thing; find women. Though they run into some obstacles, the feat is accomplished near the end of the song. Many still consider this recording the ultimate cruise & chill song.

The Sunday Rewind: Volume 11 (April 5, 2009)
by Mr. 5 Star on Apr 5th, 2009Read More » TagsThe Sunday Rewind is a compilation of tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. They are simply songs that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 Stars”. The Sunday Rewind is done on the first Sunday of each month. Check out Previous Sunday Rewinds.
Tone Tone – What Up Doe
Tone Tone might not be a name many are familiar with. Tone Tone, most known in the Metro Detroit area, is an up and coming artist who splashed on to the scene around the year 2005 with his smash hit, “What Up Doe”; a Detroit anthem. While mainstream success is yet to happen for the artist, the track “What Up Doe” is considered a classic among many Detroiters. It is difficult to walk through Detroit without the baseline and vocals of this track shaking someone’s trunk.
DOWNLOAD: Tone Tone – What Up Doe (MP3)
Skee-Lo – I Wish
Skee-Lo is mostly known for his hit song, “I Wish”, which features a very catchy tune in which Lo raps about being a “baller, a little bit taller” and his desire for a girlfriend that he could call, all things everyone can relate to at some point in their life. A little know fact about the song; the song contains a sample from the song “Spinnin’” by Bernard Wright from the album ‘Nard.
DOWNLOAD: Ske-Lo – I Wish (MP3)
Redman – Merry Jane ft. Snoop Dogg & Nate Dogg
After a six year hiatus, Redman released Red Gone Wild: Thee Album in 2007. A standout track on the album is entitled “Merry Jane”, a song dedicated to marijuana, and it was only fitting for a notorious marijuana user, Snoop Dogg, for the song. To bring the classic “O.G” feel to the track, Nate Dogg blesses the track with his vocals; a must have for those with “smoke song” collections.
DOWNLOAD: Redman – Merry Jane ft. Snoop Dogg & Nate Dogg (MP3)
Fabolous – Breathe
“Breathe” is the lead single from Fabolous’ studio album, Real Talk, which was released in 2004. In an interview with Tim Westwood, Fabolous recollects writing to the song and writing lyrics around the sample which he thought said “Breathe”, but was informed by Just Blaze that the track in fact didn’t state “Breathe, but instead stated only “eeee”, but through his musical talent, Just Blaze was able to manipulate the sample to say Breathe”. The song reached number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Curren$y – My House ft. Lil Wayne
Before Curren$y severed ties with Young Money Entertainment, he collaborated with many of the artists on the label, the most popular being Lil Wayne. “My House” is a prime example of the two artists making great music together on a greatly produced instrumental, as they suggest that the female can do whatever she wants in their home if she chooses to visit.

The Sunday Rewind: Volume 10 (March 1, 2009)
by Mr. 5 Star on Mar 2nd, 2009Read More » TagsAfter a 2 months hiatus, The Sunday Rewind is back! For those of you don’t know what the Sunday Rewind is, it is a few tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. They are simply songs that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 Stars”. Jesse James – Dopeman (Hustler’s Theme)
Jesse James might not be a name many are familiar with. Jesse James, most known for his affiliations with the Street Lords and Cheddar Boyz. James hails from the city of Detroit. While mainstream success is yet to happen for the artist, the track “Dopeman” is considered a classic among many Detroiters. It is difficult to walk through Detroit without the baseline and vocals of this track shaking someone’s trunk.

Eminem – Kim
Usually, when someone makes a track with the name of someone close to them as the title, it is a tribute to that person. In Eminem’s case, it is the exact opposite. In “Kim”, Eminem goes through a violent rage about his then ex-wife. Eminem later re-married Kim, only to divorce again less than a year later. The song appeared on The Marshall Mathers LP (2000).
DOWNLOAD: Eminem – Kim (MP3)
Gnarls Barkley – Going On
This 2009 Grammy-nominated (Best Pop Performance by Duo/Group with vocals) single appeared on the soundtrack of 2K Sports NBA 2K9, which Mr. 5 Star plays on a daily basis, which is also how I learned of the highly impressive track. The song also appears on Gnarls Barkley’s 2008 album, The Odd Couple. The short length of the track is highly disappointing, as it leaves the listener craving for more.
DOWNLOAD: Gnarls Barkley – Going On (MP3)
Jay-Z – Song Cry
Long-time hardcore fans of Jay-Z probably need no introduction to the rapper’s fourth single from the instant classic album, Blueprint (2001). For those who do, “Song Cry” is what many would dub one of Jay-Z’s most heartfelt and personal tracks to date. The song is a true-life story, as Jay shares a story about his broken heart, but expresses that his persona will not allow him to shed tears, in turn allowing the song to do the crying.
DOWNLOAD: Jay-Z – Song Cry (MP3)
Outkast – Bombs Over Baghdad
“Bombs Over Baghdad” was Outkast’s first single from their year 2000 album, Stankonia, which reached number 2 on the Billboard 200, and has also gone on to be one of the highest critically acclaimed hip hop albums of all time. It is a little known fact that the song was banned from some TV stations due to the current bombings in Baghdad at the time of the song’s popularity.

The Sunday Rewind: Volume 9 (December 7, 2008)
by Mr. 5 Star on Dec 8th, 2008Read More » TagsFor those of you don’t know what the Sunday Rewind is, it is basically a few tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. Or simply just songs that didn’t get any attention that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 STARS” in my opinion. **I’m trying a new format in this volume…I decided to put a bit more effort into the segment. Thought, comments, and thanks are appreciated!
Camron ft. Mase – Horse and Carriage
Ahh..the good ole days. Cam’ron was young, hungry, humble and most of all, he was still cool with childhood friend, Ma$e. “We gonna rise to the top” is exactly what they both did, it’s unfortunate that their stint at the top lasted just about as long as their friendship.
DOWNLOAD: Camron ft. Mase – Horse and Carriage (MP3)
House of Pain – Jump Around
Anytime the sound of this song resonates through the speakers, you know what to do. The DJ Muggs produced song became an instant classic. Their self titled debut album, House of Pain went multi-platinum based on the success of this song as well as alternate versions by pete Rock.

Ludacris – Rollout (My Business)
Staring at the face of what many have dubbed as “The Sophomore jinx” in music, Ludacris was faced with the challenge of making not only another hit single, but another great album. Not only did Luda succeed in getting past the “jinx”, he did so in a grand fashion; the album received Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album of 2003.
DOWNLOAD: Ludacris – Rollout (My Business) (MP3)
R. Kelly – I Wish
Most now know him as the King of Golden Showers, but before all the hoopla surrounding the sex tape scandal, R. Kelly was a name that meant quality music. “I Wish” reflects this in every way. Throughout the song, Kelly reflects on his past life, past friends, family and fallen soldiers. If there was ever a meaningful song from R. Kelly, “I Wish” is it.

Tupac – Ghost
Years after Tupac was murdered in Las Vegas, Pac continued to pump out great music. Many wondered how this was possible, some thinking he may still be alive. In fact, some still believe Tupac lives. Whether he lives physically or or not, his spirit is indeed alive today. Tupac is very well known for his ability to tell a great story, “Ghost” is no different; Classic Tupac storytelling resounds throughout. The Eminem produced track appeared on the soundtrack to the 2003 Academy-Award nominated documentary, Tupac Ressurection.
