Wiz Khalifa Inks Deal with Atlantic Records via Rostrum Records

by Mr. 5 Star on Jul 30th, 2010

wiz khalifa1 Wiz Khalifa Inks Deal with Atlantic Records via Rostrum Records

Atlantic Records has announced the signing of acclaimed rapper Wiz Khalifa, an outcome of a deal with Rostrum Records, the rapper’s longtime independent label. The Pittsburgh-based hip-hop sensation is currently at work on his much-anticipated label debut, slated for release in early 2011.

Recently named MTV’s “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” Wiz is set to embark on a massive North American tour dubbed the “Waken Baken Tour,” which kicks off on Thursday, September 16th at Philadelphia’s The Trocadero and then continues through late November (see attached itinerary).

Having already released a steady stream of popular mixtapes, Wiz blew up big-time, earlier this year with the release of his blockbuster, “KUSH & ORANGE JUICE.” The mixtape proved to be a genuine online phenomenon, quickly becoming the #1 search topic on both Google and Yahoo, as well as a #1 trending topic on Twitter, with the hashtag, #kushandorangejuice. “KUSH & ORANGE JUICE” is now ranked as the “Most Popular Mixtape of All Time” at DatPiff.comwith nearly a quarter of a million downloads to date.

Since then, Wiz’ online presence has been undeniable, with close to 8 million profile views and a total of nearly 30 million plays at his official MySpace page, www.myspace.com/wizkhalifa, as well as over 220,000 fans following him atwww.twitter.com/RealWizKhalifa. In addition to this, the rapper’s official Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/WizKhalifa, is “liked” by over 400,000 people.

Inspired by hip-hop’s greatest artists but determined to pave his own lane, Wiz Khalifa first made waves after an encounter with Rostrum Records’ founder Benjy Grinberg. The label head instantly recognized a superstar on the rise and Rostrum soon released Wiz’ first mixtape, “PRINCE OF THE CITY,” and the subsequent debut album, “SHOW AND PROVE,” in 2006. The album quickly earned unprecedented critical praise, with Okayplayer.com declaring it “arguably the best hip-hop release of the year,” officially putting Wiz on the radar of artists to look out for.

Riding the momentum of “SHOW AND PROVE,” Wiz released a multitude of mixtapes over the next three years, gaining him both the buzz and the loyal fan base needed to catapult him to the next level. Wiz’ next album, “DEAL OR NO DEAL,” was released in November of 2009 and landed in the #1 spot on iTunes “Top Hip Hop/Rap Albums” chart thanks to the huge buzz generated by his indefatigable grassroots grind. Showing no signs of slowing down, Wiz embarked on a 40-city, sold out “Deal Or No Deal Tour,” in support of the highly successful album.

recovery EMINEM Eminem Recovery First Week Album Sales

In related news, Drake’s Thank Me Later added 156,451 albums to his first week’s 462,989 certifying it gold in two weeks. We all knew this summer was going to be big for Hip Hop.

Lil Kim Wants Nicki To Pay Homage

by Lioness on Jun 6th, 2010

Here is a video of Drake in concert responding to Lil Kim about her wanting Nicki Minaj to pay homage to her. Now this may be a publicity stunt to draw more attention to Lil Kim who has recently signed a record deal with Roc Nation. However, as I reflect on Lil Kim’s career, she never has been the type to start beef to garner more attention towards herself by creating beef with another artist because she never needed to. Lil Kim is probably one of the few female artists who has never struggled to sale albums or create hype for an upcoming project. If there is one thing I have learned about Lil Kim over the years is that she does not like to be disrespected, and it is then that she goes at other artists. (i.e. Foxy Brown)

But I digress. The problem I have with Drake’s outburst against Lil Kim is his lack of respect for this female icon. I seriously had a “Who are you?” moment when I watched this video.

First this had nothing to do with Drake, so why he felt like he had to be Nicki’s Knight in shining armour, I am not sure. He claims that Nicki is better than Lil Kim. GTFOH. Fan of a Fan Mixtape > Thank Me Later.

Second, Nicki can’t keep hiding behind “Young Money walls” and avoiding beef when other female MC’s come at her. Eventually, she is going to have to stand up for herself and prove herself as a rapper. Right now people consider her the hottest female in the rap industry and the “savior” for female rappers. However, it is easy to look like you are the hottest MC when you have no competition. When Keys came at Nicki with her diss, Nicki went on youtube all sad and you could tell that her feelings were hurt. Her only response was, I am going to ignore you and never say your name. But you took the time to make a whole video. Humph, Bitch move.

DJ Premier Issues Statement On Guru’s Passing

by Mr. 5 Star on Apr 21st, 2010

gangstarr DJ Premier Issues Statement On Guru’s Passing

IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.

FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.

I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER
