Stoopid Lyrics: “On My Own Dick” Edition
by Mr. 5 Star on Jul 6th, 2010Read More » Tags“I don’t need yo pussy, bitch I’m on my own dick”
-Kanye West, “Power” (3:00)
Wait, let me get this straight. So Kanye is basically saying that he dick rides himself so often that he no longer needs the satisfaction of the female genitalia, also known as a vagina, or as Kanye puts it, “pussy”. Hmmm. Interesting. So I think I got it; Either gay, stupid lyric or Kanye just likes to jack off a lot. You pick. I vote for all three.
Bonus Stoopid Lyric:
“I was drinkin earlier… now I’m drivin”
File this one under: Not smart and/or Dry snitching on self.
Disclaimer: Before you get your panties in a bunch about your beloved Kanye (coughLevicough), just know this segment is all in fun. I actually fucks wit the song…just some questionable lyrics.

Stoopid Lyrics: “Hot Up In The Club” Edition
by Mr. 5 Star on Jun 16th, 2010Read More » TagsIf you visited our sister site, DapsAndPounds back when we were active on it, you know I had a segment called “Stoopid Lyrics“. It’s pretty self-explanatory segment. I’ll just make fun of dumb ass lyrics. Since I barely have time to update 5 Star Hip Hop, I surely don’t have time to update DnP. So I’m moving the segment to this site. This segment is the COMPLETE opposite of Hot Verse of the Day!
“It’s so hot up in the club, that I ain’t got no shoes on”
-Hurricane Chris, “Ay Bay Bay” (0:58)
Umm…..why? Have you ever been in a club Hurricane Chris? Apparently not. Let’s see; there’s broken glass, spilled drinks, throw up, bodily fluids…and oh yeah, BROKEN GLASS! None of this sounds like something that would make me take my shoes off in the club. In fact, that thought has NEVER crossed my mind while hot in a club. Imagine this fool walking around tryna holla at females holding his stanky ass shoes in his hand. How would that go over? Do you have your boy hold em for you? “Ay dog, hold my shoes while I go to the bathroom….” See what I’m gettin’ at here? Not a smart move man, not a smart move at all. Did I mention the song sucks monkey balls? Oh….the songs sucks monkey balls.
Final Word: Keep your damn shoes on! If you hot, take yo ass outside!

Hot Verse Of The Day – J. Cole
by JZ Axe on May 3rd, 2010Read More » TagsI felt the need to post this for two reasons. One, because J. Cole absolutely kills “Who Dat”, and two, because I feel like no one is talking about this song anymore. J. Cole’s lead single off his upcoming album Cole World is worlds better than Wale’s “Chillin’,” Drake’s “Over,” B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ On You,” and really any single the new school of rappers have put out in the last year. Yet I feel like the track just came and went, and that’s just wrong. To remind you of how crazy Cole is with the words on this track, hit the jump for the second verse of “Who Dat”. Roc Nation!

5STARHIPHOP Presents: Doxx
by JZ Axe on Apr 30th, 2010Read More » TagsPeople who are familiar with my posts here know that I have a penchant for interviewing artists that are not that well known. I enjoy looking for up and coming talent and getting to talk to them to understand what they are really about. I first brought you Wes Blaze, then Goone, but today I’m bringing you an artist that is a bit more established in the game. His name is Doxx, a native of my hometown Cleveland Heights who most recently has been working out in Toronto on his debut album. Already 5 mixtapes deep, with one of them having been hosted by Mick Boogie and Terry Urban, today Doxx released his latest tape, Let It Be…Famous, his own twist to six Beatles’ songs. I was able to interview him while he was in Toronto last week, so hit the jump to learn more about Doxx and download his music.

Hot Verse Of The Week – Gang Starr Edition
by JZ Axe on Apr 23rd, 2010Read More » TagsIn honor of the tragic passing of Guru this week, I want to dedicate the Hot Verse of The Week to one half of the groundbreaking group that is Gang Starr. Their 1994 release Hard To Earn is and always will be one of my favorite hip-hop albums, and the way Guru flowed so effortlessly over Premo’s beats is something that will never be matched. Gang Starr was unique and Guru won’t be forgotten. My selection comes from the first verse of my favorite Gang Starr song, “You Know My Steez” off of Moment Of Truth. RIP Guru. Hit the jump for the lyrics, because Guru kills this song.

Much Ado About “Nothin’ On You”
by JZ Axe on Apr 23rd, 2010Read More » TagsWhile the hip-hop community celebrates the recent dominance of B.o.B.’s two singles on Itunes, I have had to quell my optimism. ”Nothin’ On You” has resided in the No. 1 spot on Itunes for weeks now, and Bobby Ray’s second single, “Airplanes,” has fittingly slid into the No. 2 spot. While I commend B.o.B. for the success he is experiencing with his singles that will certainly translate into decent album sales, it also saddens me. ”But JZ, why the negativity?” you might ask. ”A legitimate hip-hop artist is finally dipping into the mainstream and making a name for himself! Be proud of that!” I would nod my head in agreement with you, but before you dismiss my negatvity, let me help you understand why just because B.o.B. is at the top of the charts doesn’t mean real hip-hop has reached the mainstream.

Verse of the Day: Fort Minor – Cigarettes
by T Marko on Apr 16th, 2010Read More » TagsAlright, it’s been quite some time since I last posted a song or verse highlighting it’s high level of lyrical technicality or great content. So for this one, I’m takin’ it back to the lone Fort Minor album The Rising Tied. It’s been almost 5 years since the Linkin Park member took his talent on the mic and expanded into the hip-hop world with his group Fort Minor. Littered with great features from people like Common, Black Thought, Kenna, and John Legend, this album is a classic in my eyes. I am not afraid to say that the incredible social consciousness and perfectly put-together storytelling on this album make this one of the best hip-hop albums I have listened to. If you don’t like it, then so be it, but that’s just my opinion. It’s really a shame that (apart from the mixtape We Major) this album is their owly major work together. I would have loved to see Mike do another album or two. These days he’s heavily involved in the art scene, while still working with his band mates in Linkin Park on their upcoming works. You can catch up with what he’s doing on his website, or follow what he’s up to on his twitter.
So without further ado, I’ll get to the song I chose titled “Cigarettes.” The song gives us a fresh, and very truthful perspective, comparing hip-hop to cigarettes. There’s really no need to explain why I chose this song, as you’ll see why when you read it, and if you already know the song, then props to you. Hit the jump for the rest of the verses and a download of the song.
Verse 1:
Man I love this rap game, mainly cause its cool,
To add a little spice to the life you’ve been through,
Everyone exaggerates a tiny little bit,
Make that shit sound more gangsta than it really is
You can’t appear weak man/We wanna hear street
We wanna hear you spit your thug over this here beat
Don’t take it as sarcastic/I can’t get enough I’m tellin you,
You can call my bluff if its not rough then I really don’t need it,
I’m not even ashamed/I’ve got too much reality and it’s fillin up my brain,
So sell me on the product/Im addicted to the game
Suck it up like a cigarette, light it up

The Sunday Rewind: Vol. 13 (March 28, 2010)
by Mr. 5 Star on Mar 28th, 2010Read More » TagsAfter almost a year hiatus, The Sunday Rewind returns with Volume 13! Did you miss it!? The Sunday Rewind is a compilation of tracks that ARE NOT NEW. They are tracks that could be 5 months old to 50 years old. They are simply songs that I felt needed to get attention. All of these songs are “5 Stars”. Check out Previous Sunday Rewinds.
Geto Boys – Mind Playin’ Tricks
Many are not familiar with the 90′s rap group, the Geto Boys. The Geto Boys were every prominent throughout the early 90′s, while many of today’s hip hop fans were in diapers, so I guess we get a pass. Anyhow, many very familiar with what is considered a classic song from the group. In this 1991 #1 hit, the group raps about those hallucinating, paranoid moments many of us have had. The song speaks to anyone who has experienced paranoia and hallucinatory moments; when your mind is “playin tricks on ya”. (Music Video)

TLC – Unpretty
If there was ever a song to teach a life lesson, TLC’s “Unpretty” is it. The song has a strong underlying theme about self acceptance and being yourself. The accompanying music video helps to bring the lyrics to life. The song was also nominated for a Grammy in 1999 for Song of The Year. I’m not sure what song won, but a song with a message like self acceptance is one that probably should have won. (Music Video) *Sidenote: If I didn’t know any better, I’d say the dude playin’ guitar in the field is B.o.B!

Trick Daddy – Shut Up ft. Trina, Co & Deuce Poppito
Though “Nann” was a huge single for Trick Daddy and Trina, Trick Daddy introduced himself to many when he dropped “Shut Up”. The song is extremely raw and in your face. The band-inspired instrumental and “I don’t care” attitude used throughout are very arousing to the average listener. The accompanying music video perpetuates this theme. “Shut Up” is essentially what many now know as “crunk music”, before Lil Jon came along and coined the term. Ironically, Trick and Lil Jon later worked together in 2004 on Trick’s smash single, “Let’s Go“. (Music Video)

Cam’ron – He Tried to Play Me ft. Hell Rell
Cam’ron is most known for his own, unique style of wordplay over an unique instrumental. “He Tried to Play Me”, which appeared on the 2006 album, Killa Season, is no different. Cam delivers his unique wordplay over a melodic instrumental that boasts a strong piano influence, which resembles a catchy nursery rhyme theme. Ironically, the nursery rhyme sound features violent lyrics from Cam and Dipset mate, Hell Rell, a sound the Dipset duo pulls off exceptionally well.

Clipse – Grindin’ (Selector/Reggae Remix) ft. Sean Paul, Kardinall Offishall & Bless
Clipse splashed onto the hip hop scene with the smash record “Grindin’”, a Neptunes produced record that was mostly known for its one-of-a-kind instrumental. The heavily drug-influenced lyrics probably helped, too. To this day, “Grindin’” is arguably the Virginia duo’s most well-known single from their 2001 debut album, Lord Willin’. Of course, there was a remix, which featured N.O.R.E., Birdman and Lil Wayne, but what ended up being my favorite remix was the “Selector” Remix, also known as the Reggae Remix. To this day, I have no idea what the lyrics are, but they sound good, so who cares!

JZ Axe’s Hip Hop Confessions
by JZ Axe on Mar 21st, 2010Read More » TagsI haven’t gotten my “hip-hop journalist” on in a while. so if you don’t mind, I would like to do that now. Each morning I pack my backpack with my laptop, books, folders and whatever else I need for the day’s endeavors on campus. More important than all of those things though are my Sony headphones. From the moment I sit down on the padded blue seats on the bus that takes me to campus until I retire to my house when my classes have ended, my ears are usually hidden behind two silver circles that make up my headphones. As I listen to the plethora of hip-hop that I have on my Iphone, a lot of thoughts run through my head. I would like to share those with you all now. As Usher would say, these are my confessions. Sorry, I’ll pause that! Hit the jump for my thoughts, and if you want to comment, please feel free. I always enjoy a good hip-hop conversation.
