Here is a video of Drake in concert responding to Lil Kim about her wanting Nicki Minaj to pay homage to her. Now this may be a publicity stunt to draw more attention to Lil Kim who has recently signed a record deal with Roc Nation. However, as I reflect on Lil Kim’s career, she never has been the type to start beef to garner more attention towards herself by creating beef with another artist because she never needed to. Lil Kim is probably one of the few female artists who has never struggled to sale albums or create hype for an upcoming project. If there is one thing I have learned about Lil Kim over the years is that she does not like to be disrespected, and it is then that she goes at other artists. (i.e. Foxy Brown)
But I digress. The problem I have with Drake’s outburst against Lil Kim is his lack of respect for this female icon. I seriously had a “Who are you?” moment when I watched this video.
First this had nothing to do with Drake, so why he felt like he had to be Nicki’s Knight in shining armour, I am not sure. He claims that Nicki is better than Lil Kim. GTFOH. Fan of a Fan Mixtape > Thank Me Later.
Second, Nicki can’t keep hiding behind “Young Money walls” and avoiding beef when other female MC’s come at her. Eventually, she is going to have to stand up for herself and prove herself as a rapper. Right now people consider her the hottest female in the rap industry and the “savior” for female rappers. However, it is easy to look like you are the hottest MC when you have no competition. When Keys came at Nicki with her diss, Nicki went on youtube all sad and you could tell that her feelings were hurt. Her only response was, I am going to ignore you and never say your name. But you took the time to make a whole video. Humph, Bitch move.

Lastly, my most important issue with this situation is the lack of respect for Lil Kim. Everyone who knows anything about Lil Kim knows that she has been calling herself “The Black Barbie” and “The Queen Bee” for years. She has worn the wigs, revealing outfits and used the sexually explicit lyrics. Even if she was the only female rapper appearing on the track, she went just as hard, if not harder than her counterparts. I believe that fans fell for Lil Kim not because of what she wore or looked like, but because of her lyrics and her realness. She paved the way for Nicki to come in and run around the way she has been these past couple of months. So why shouldn’t Nicki pay homage to Lil Kim? I feel that this is only right. I mean she is basically being her. Why not respect her and tell her thank you? Ask her to be on a song with you? Who knows what type of honors Lil Kim wants, but instead of letting Drake fight your battles (but he never respondes to male rappers that come at him, but he wants to go at Lil Kim), have your agent or people call Lil Kim and clear the air.
This lack of respect for artists who have paved the way for the up-incoming appears to be a growing trend these days in the music industry that I don’t like. If Beyonce can pay tribute to Tina Turner (who she can’t touch in my eyes), Chris Brown to Michael Jackson at almost every last one of their concerts, why can’t Trey Songz pay tribute to R. Kelly (Ready had so much R. Kelly influence, it wasn’t even funny) and Nicki to Lil Kim? You guys let me know what your thoughts are. Because Nicki and Trey are on pause, while I like some of Trey’s music, I refuse to purchase his album and Nicki I think she is a joke. Massive Attack = Garbage. Yes, I do buy albums. Ha. In early interviews when she is asked who in the game she looks up to, without taking a breathe she says Lil’ Kim. Lil Kim is a Icon. Drake and Nicki Minaj are 2 of the more popular artist out at the moment. The issue is that if Lil Kim wants Nicki to homage to her that’s something that she could’ve done in private. Even though it is pointless. In various interviews she specifically mentions how she respects Lil’ Kim (along with other female emcee’s) for paving the way so I’m not sure what Nick has done to make Lil Kim disregard all of those times she has “payed homage” and Lil Kim should be much bigger than how she’s acting.
